“SpongeBob SquarePants” Icon Squidward Is Getting His Own Netflix Spinoff
In a turn of events none of us could have predicted, it looks like Spongebob Squarepants legend Squidward will be getting his own spinoff series. We've known Nickelodeon was planning Spongebob spinoffs since February, but now we're finally getting some concrete news about what this first spinoff will be about.
The news comes after the recent multi-year deal struck between Netflix and Nickelodeon that adds even more Nickelodeon hits to the streaming giant's library. This deal will also open the doors for original content to be created based on characters from the kid-friendly channel. Hypebae reports the still untitled Squidward spinoff will "focus on SpongeBob’s neighbor Squidward, the irritable musician who plays the clarinet and works with SpongeBob at the Krusty Krab restaurant" and, because Squidward is known for playing his clarinet, the spinoff will be "music-based."
Other details about the show are being kept under wraps since the project is in the early stages of development, so it's unclear when this show is expected to debut, if it will go straight to Netflix or make a pit-stop at Nickelodeon first, and whether we can expect to see Spongebob characters like Spongebob, Patrick, and Sandy in the series.
It seems like Spongebob is gearing up for all kinds of new adventures because, just a day after the news of the Netflix-Nickelodeon deal and this Squidward spinoff news, the first trailer for The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run dropped. A new chapter in the Spongebob saga is just getting started, friends. Buckle up.
