Given that we spend ⅓ of our lives sleeping, I know that good bedding is worth the investment. It was in college that I learned how much of a difference bedding makes in your daily life — namely, because my college decided not to spend our tuition money on decent dorm mattresses. I shuffled between unbelievably stiff, ache-inducing cots for a couple of years, and during that time, I made it my mission to make my bed as comfortable as possible while on a student budget. Nearly 10 pillows, multiple throws on top of a comforter, and a thin mattress topper from home made it nearly tolerable — but when I moved into my first apartment, I was excited to finally create the bed setup of my dreams.

Things, unfortunately, didn’t go exactly to plan. The mattress I ordered ended up being way too firm for my liking, and I never got around to upgrading my mattress topper. I bore it and got used to it. The hassle of getting a new mattress up several flights of stairs — and forking over more cash — sounded less than appealing, after all. Over the past few months of working at AT and testing bed products, though, I’ve gotten a taste of what I’ve been missing. The best one? Essentia’s Zero Gravity Organic Latex Topper, which has enhanced my quality of sleep to the point where I don’t know how I ever went without it. It feels like I’m sleeping on a whole new mattress, making it totally worth the splurgy price (which is a bit less hefty right now during the brand’s sitewide, 25% off Cyber Week sale).

What is the Zero Gravity Organic Latex Topper?

The eco-friendly Zero Gravity topper might not look super cushiony at only 1.5 inches thick, but the level of comfort that it provides is unreal. The brand claims that it stands apart from every other latex topper on the market due to its special organic formula — and though I haven’t tried too many alternative options as of yet, I can confidently say that it strikes the perfect balance between being supportive and allowing you to sink into it. It’s slightly bouncy, and once you settle into it, the foam cradles your body. An unexpected but certainly welcome feature is that, in addition to making your bed more cozy, the foam shields your body from EMF radiation. Essentia says it “promot[es] deep, uninterrupted sleep,” and after a few months of use, I can believe it.

Why I Love the Zero Gravity Organic Latex Topper

A couple of months before receiving this topper, I had yanked my old mattress topper off in frustration — it never stayed in place and always got bunched up under my sheets — and had been resting on my bare too-firm mattress. A bit of context: I’ve also spent the last half-year getting used to a 9-to-5 job instead of a college class schedule, so I’ve really started to value a full eight hours of sleep. I also work from home most of the week and have been spending way more time in my bedroom. With all of these factors at play, the Zero Gravity topper came into my life at the perfect time.

Initially, I doubted how comfy such a thin topper could be, but when I pulled it out of the box, I was shocked at how substantial and heavy it was. Still, it wasn’t unmanageable, since I was able to lift it onto my bed with my abysmal upper body strength. There are four elastic bands that wrap around each corner of the mattress, and they slide into place with little trouble on my part – I didn’t even need to hoist my mattress up. I will say, the only drawback I’ve experienced with the topper is that it’s about an inch short on one end, but since my pillows cover the top of my mattress anyway, it hasn’t presented much of an issue.

As someone who reluctantly adapted to a firm mattress but still craved some plushness, Essentia’s topper delivers just the right amount of support. I’m also a fairly restless sleeper — or I thought I was. I never really stick to one sleeping position, alternating between my side and my stomach. Before, I would adjust for a while before actually being able to drift off, but ever since introducing this topper to my setup, it has improved drastically. It hugs my body well regardless of how I lay and remains securely in place. I’m counting my lucky stars now that the Zero Gravity topper arrived before the cold weather did — my bed has never felt more snug,
