How a Spin Class Phenom Found Her Way to Road Riding

Kelly Krause was scrolling through Instagram after a Sunday ride when one image nearly made her spit out her coffee. Her sister, Nicole, had posted her first ever #baaw (bike against a wall) photo—a social media staple for cycling diehards. Kelly was ecstatic.

Because the women live together in Austin, Texas, Nicole is no stranger to bikes. But until that point, she had yet to actually get out and ride one. The more she was exposed to Kelly’s riding routine—early morning wake-ups, water bottle preparation, Garmin charging, post-ride reports, etc.—the more she began to wonder what was driving her sister’s passion.

Kelly capitalized on Nicole’s interest and encouraged her to get a bike: a hybrid fit for versatile riding. Nicole, a former collegiate soccer player and avid spin class attendee, is fast, strong, and loves to explore, so she was quickly lovestruck.

Kelly tries to keep in mind that not everyone’s cycling goals are in line with hers. She’s all about training hard for speed and power, while her sister is content with a leisurely, adventurous spin around the neighborhood. For now, Kelly settles for answering typical beginner cycling questions (e.g. Are padded shorts really necessary?), while patiently waiting for the day when she can knock on Nicole’s door and say, “Kit up. We’re going to crush some hills today.”

This summer, quite a range of characters took to two wheels as part of our movement to double the number of bikes on the road. Woman eight months pregnant? Check. Special needs student? Got it covered. See their #GetSomeoneRiding success stories here.
