Chef Marcus Samuelsson took on the Yahoo Life 5-Day Reset Your Breakfast Challenge with panache, showing off a recipe from his latest cookbook that weaves a traditional Caribbean and African ingredient into a quick and modern breakfast staple – the smoothie.

MARCUS SAMUELSSON: Good morning, everybody. Chef Marcus Samuelsson here from my home, our home, right here in Harlem. I've taken on the Reset Breakfast Challenge. How can we start our day healthy, but also delicious? We're all going through a very, very difficult time, so it's never been more important to start your morning right.

And I'm recommending for you this incredible smoothie. It's actually in my book, "The Rise", that's coming out this fall. So I'm going to start with a smoothie that stars sea moss. Sea moss is something being used in Caribbean and Africa for a long time. Sea moss is just like this. Look at this. This is something you soak, very often overnight, and then you puree it. And then you have this incredible paste that is super healthy and delicious. So that's going to be a base to our smoothie that we're doing today.

We're also going to add in almond. So this is going to be both healthy and delicious. We got some dates, couple of dates, and then cucumber to get that watered, crisp taste. Tons of apples. I love apples. We're walking into apple season. Going to give it a really great, crisp taste, right? So I'm adding in my apples, and all the liquid, all the juice, is going to come from grapefruit juice.

I don't know what those other chefs are doing. I know what we're eating and drinking here the Samuelsson house, and we're starting this with a really great, refreshing smoothie. All right. Let me blend it up and show you the final result.

Ready to go. Yes. Go get the almonds. Just going to squeeze in a little bit more extra grapefruit juice, just for garnish. And this is my Reset Breakfast Challenge. Enjoy it. It's super delicious.
