Record Store Day is this month, and Des Moines is rich in record stores and live concert venues to celebrate the day of independent vinyl stores and music.
When is National Record Store Day?
National Record Store Day is commonly on the third Saturday of every April and every Black Friday in November.
It started in 2007 when a group of independent record store owners and employees wanted to celebrate record stores, while spreading the word about sharing about the nearly 1,400 independently-owned record stores in the country, according to the Record Store Day website.
Is vinyl making a comeback?
In the age of digital music, records have made a comeback with top artists not only offering their albums on streaming services but also on vinyl.
In 2023, Taylor Swift's music made up 7% of all vinyl albums sold in the U.S., according to Forbes. Americans bought 49.61 million albums on vinyl in 2023, which was up 14% from 2022.

How to spend Record Store Day in Des Moines?
Some record stores are hosting sales or special events, including:
Zzz Records: The store will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. with special releases that are exclusive to independent record stores. There will be a random drawing at the end of the night. Prizes include tickets to the Gladys Knight and the Pips concert at Vibrant Music Hall in Waukee. There will also be merchandise and gift card giveaways.
Vinyl Cup Des Moines: Starting at 8 a.m., Vinyl Cup will also have exclusive releases, special giveaways and free food.
Marv's Record Shop: The store will offer exclusive titles as well as food and giveaways.
Jay's CD and Hobby: There will be 100s of exclusive titles available. Stores will also offer 25% off all pre-owned vinyl and 50% off all CDs.

Live shows to see on Record Store Day
Aside from spending National Record Store Day purchasing vinyls, another way to celebrate is by watching live music. Here are the upcoming concerts on National Record Day. This list could update as April 20 approaches.

xBk Live (1159 24th St., Des Moines): Superchief, Red Desert, Carbellion and Godcrutch, 7 p.m.
