August may only be one week away, but there’s still plenty of time to sneak in a summer vacation, including a trip to the private island of Daufuskie, just off the coast of South Carolina. In honor of National Lighthouse Day, celebrated on August 7, you can stay at the island’s 1873 Haig Point Lighthouse—an intimate getaway with a rich history.

From 1873 until the 1930s, the lighthouse guided captains around the shifting shoals of Calibogue Sound, and it also helped mariners when traveling around the northern tip of Daufuskie Island.

Legend has it that the location is haunted by the friendly ghost of a young maiden named Maggie Comer, who lived with her family in the lighthouse in the 19th century. Maggie was the daughter of the first lighthouse keeper and she helped tend the structure for its first 18 years. During this time, she fell in love with a naval engineer, but the relationship didn’t last, leaving Maggie with a broken heart after he left and never returned to the island.

The 40-foot tower stands on the shore of the luxury community of Haig Point best known for the Haig Point Club—one of the top residential golf courses in the country. The historic lighthouse features two bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room, and a breathtaking rocking chair-lined porch, where you can see the ever blue Calibogue Sound.

Visitors can go horseback riding on the beach with Daufuskie Island Trail Rides, then enjoy the island’s specialty, fresh deviled crab. There are also local artisans and shops to browse after playing a round of golf.
