The Special Way King Charles Will Pay Tribute to Late Father Prince Philip at Coronation

As the coronation ceremony for King Charles steadily approaches, the royal family has teased a number of elements that attendees (and royally-obsessed fans!) can get excited about, such as the list of scheduled events, the official emblem and so much more. And now we’ve learned that as part of the festivities, His Majesty wants to take a moment to celebrate the memory of his late father, Prince Philip.

Earlier this week, Buckingham Palace shared the musical selections that will be performed at the coronation ceremony, which will be held at Westminster Abbey in London. Personally curated by the king himself, the music will include twelve newly commissioned pieces, which will be a combination of traditional and modern styles of music.

As part of the musical lineup, the king will be including Greek music as a tribute to his late dad (who was born in Greece). In addition to the sweet tribute, the music will also feature a new version of the Coronation Anthem by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

“His Majesty The King has personally commissioned the new music and shaped and selected the musical program for the Service,” the palace said in a statement, per the official royal website. “At the request of His Majesty, in tribute to his late father His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Greek Orthodox music will also feature in the Service performed by the Byzantine Chant Ensemble.”

The king’s crowning ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2023. The huge celebration will be held at Westminster Abbey in London—also the same location his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, was crowned as the Queen of England. The king will be accompanied by his wife, Queen Consort Camilla, on the day of the ceremony and the proceedings will be directed by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
