'Special Ops: Lioness' Could Return for a Second Season

The eighth and final episode of Special Ops: Lioness, entitled "Gone Is the Illusion of Order," is now streaming on Paramount+, bringing a season of high-octane espionage action to a close.

Ostensibly based on the true story of a real-life military program which trained female service members to build relationships with hijabi women in order to gain intelligence on terrorist activity, Special Ops: Lioness stars Zoe Saldaña, Morgan Freeman, Nicole Kidman, and Laysla de Oliveira.

But that can't be it, right?

This is a Taylor Sheridan show, after all: he managed to spin multiple sequels and prequels out of his landmark Yellowstone series, and Paramount+ is fast becoming populated by his ever-growing library of gritty crime opuses. It stands to reason that Sheridan conceived Special Ops: Lioness with a view to telling more stories in that world.

Will there be a Season 2 of Special Ops: Lioness?

Right now a second season has yet to be confirmed, but there are some very encouraging signs pointing to a renewal from Paramount+, most notably the show's viewership figures, which indicate that it is already proving hugely popular. The first episode of Special Ops: Lioness was the most-watched premiere on the platform, and ratings have stayed strong throughout all eight episodes.

"Special Ops: Lioness scored as the #1 new scripted series of the year on cable and one of the highest performers of all time on Paramount+," said Paramount Media Networks CEO Chris McCarthy in a statement. "Brilliantly created by Taylor Sheridan and brought to life by our stellar cast, this heart-pounding thriller inspired by real-life events clearly struck a chord with a huge audience."

Meanwhile, some fans are speculating that the construction of the title Special Ops: Lioness smay hold a clue as to the future of the show. Maybe Special Ops will be more of an anthology series moving forward, with each season focusing on a different operation, akin to shows like American Horror Story and American Crime Story—which would certainly fit with Sheridan's track record of building expansive fictional universes.
