This Brand-New Mansion in Beverly Hills Is the Ne Plus Ultra of the Trendy Modern Barnhouse Style
When Max Nobel of Nobel.LA set out to design the ultimate modern barnhouse-style mansion in Beverly Hills, he and his partners settled on a two-plus-acre hillside property in the upper reaches of Benedict Canyon, about 3.5 miles north of the Beverly Hills Hotel.
Recently completed, staged with designer furnishings and contemporary artwork, and on the market for $44.8 million, Nobel’s vision marries the latest in fittings and fixtures with expert craftsmanship and a curated collection of organic elements. The house is positioned high on the parcel to maximize the leafy, cross-canyon mountain views and is clad in reclaimed wood with massive steel-framed windows and doors that include a monumental front door that soars more than 25 feet tall.

Inside, voluminous, light-filled spaces showcase exposed roof rafters, blackened steel support beams, minimalist light fixtures, and a sophisticated interplay between light and dark and matte and glossy finishes, from the velvety black tinted plaster to the sheen of glass and the brass-accented wall paneling.
The foyer’s blackened brass staircase has a leather-wrapped handrail; the double-height living room, overlooked by a curved second-floor gallery, has a vast wall of glass that fills the room with sunlight; and the dining room is lined floor-to-ceiling in oak panels divided by slender strips of brass. Throughout are marble-lined doorways and designer light switches, along with undulating walls of vein-matched walnut panels in several rooms, including in one of the two powder rooms and the principal bedroom suite.
The kitchen is the epitome of culinary chic, with two custom-fabricated islands, one wrapped in grooved brass panels and the other crafted entirely of marble, including the drawer and cabinet fronts. A cantilevered snack bar adds an exclamation point to the bold design, while a concealed door hides an all-stainless-steel catering kitchen that’s useful for hosting large events and whipping up messy recipes. Nearby, floor-to-ceiling windows line a casual dining space, and a family room showcases a gray-flannel marble fireplace flanked by lighted bookshelves. A combination screening room/games lounge is tucked down on a lower level, along with a three-car garage and a spacious guest or staff suite with an outside entrance.
Altogether, there are seven bedrooms and 11 bathrooms dispersed across 16,390 square feet. No bedroom is ordinary or alike. A sprawling guest suite on the main floor offers overnighters a spacious lounge, an office area, and two walk-in closets, while one of the three ensuite guest or family bedrooms on the upper floor is duplexed with a lofted lounge and an adjoining office.
The principal suite occupies its own wing of the upper floor with an asymmetrical brass and marble fireplace, a soaring cathedral ceiling, and two boutique-like dressing areas lined with sleek glass wardrobes. The bathroom includes an amber-colored resin tub and a chunky marble island that incorporates a double-sink vanity, free-standing mirrors, and a dressing table.
The back of the house opens to a flat, grassy yard notched into the hillside. Another tree-shaded area outside the kitchen and family room has an alfresco dining terrace, an outdoor grill, and an outdoor fireplace. At the front of the house, there are large terraces, a couple of firepits, and a grand staircase that descends to a 60-foot-long dark-plastered negative-edge swimming pool surrounded by emerald carpets of manicured lawn.
Car enthusiasts will appreciate the off-street parking for dozens of cars, including in the detached ten-car garage that was designed to complement the house and stands just inside the eye-catching patchworked steel entry gates.
