SPCA Monterey County Rescues Over 200 Pets from Pajaro, California Flooding

These first responders are heroes to these pets and their owners.

After a week of torrential rain and flooding, the California town of Pajaro is no longer in need of rescue crews for its animal residents. SPCA Monterey County can be thanked for the successful rescue of over 200 pets in the last week, some of whom are already reunited with their loving owners.

As a Facebook post from SPCA explains, 216 animals are currently in their care. These animals include pet dogs, cats, chickens, birds, a rabbit, and an iguana. Take a look at this brief clip from KCAL News for more information on the flooding rescue efforts.

As anyone can see, the rescue efforts of these heroes were an immense success. Pet owners were also a large piece of the puzzle, as many of the animals were located thanks to tips from the owners themselves.

KSBW reports that the only fatalities were a few birds in cages that were low to the ground. Aside from those few, any pet who wasn't able to evacuate with their owner was eventually rescued. Of course, these animals have still been through an incredibly hard time.

“Overall, they’re OK," explained Beth Brookhouser, the SPCA Monterey County spokesperson. "They are hungry. They are a little thin. Many had floodwater on them so we are cleaning them. We’re giving them fresh food, fresh water, lots of comfy, cozy bedding, and making sure they’re loved." That must mean the world to these pets' owners, many of whom have yet to reunite with their furry, feathered, and scaly friends.

With so many pets in the care of SPCA Monterey County, donations of any amount (or of pet food) would help them immensely. Their shelter and other pet services--including a pet food and supply pantry--are all free to the public, so donations allow them to provide the best possible care.
