The Spanish royal family's Christmas card gives distinctly autumnal vibes. In the photo, released today by the royals, Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia pose in knit sweaters in Zarzuela Palace's gardens in Madrid. Sofia, 15, wraps her arms around her older sister Leonor, 17 in the snap, taken earlier this year.
Both royals appear to be wearing Zara sweaters, a favorite retailer of their mom Queen Letizia. Sofia seems to be in a striped knit sweater from Zara, whereas Leonor opted for a classic woven cable knit sweater.
Inside the card, the message reads "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2023" in both Spanish and English, and is signed by all four members of the family: King Felipe, Queen Letizia, and the two princesses.
Last year, the Spanish King and Queen appeared on the Christmas card, but this year, they chose just to spotlight their daughters.
The Spanish royal sisters largely stay out of the spotlight; Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia last appeared in October, when they attended a series of engagements related to the Princess of Asturias Awards.
Princess Leonor is the Princess of Asturias—the awards are a series of annual prizes awarded by the Princess of Asturias foundation. She also holds the titles of Princess of Girona and Princess of Viana. Leonor, the heir presumptive to the Spanish throne, will be the first Queen Regent of Spain since Queen Isabella II—Isabella reigned from 1833 to 1868.
Leonor currently attends boarding school in Wales, at UWC Atlantic. Other royalty have attended the Welsh school, located in medieval castle, including Princess Raiyah bint Hussein of Jordan and Princess Elisabeth of Belgium. Her classmate is another princess, Princess Alexia of the Netherlands.
