Owl Necklaces, Space Leggings, And Other Horrible 2013 Fashion Trends

The early 2010s were a tough time for fashion. There was a lot of business casual attire being worn to the club, excessive pleather and spikes, and boho chic was taken to new levels.

As it's 2023, let's look back to 10 years ago and relive the most shameful trends we took part of. Prepare to cringe.

1.Space Leggings

A model wears galaxy print leggings and Converse in a field

Space leggings, galaxy leggings, whatever you called them, they were...hideous. And we should not have been allowed to wear them in public. On the bright side, I guess they went with everything, since they were so ridiculous that they didn't really match with anything.

2.Peplum Shirts

Singer/actress Selena Gomez attends the 2013 NewNowNext Awards at The Fonda Theatre on April 13, 2013 in Los Angeles, California

No one could escape the peplum shirt trend, not even the trendiest celebs. There was no reason for this design. As much as the silhouette tried to be flattering, it just looked dumb.

3.Owl Necklaces

Bianca Gascoigne Attends The European Premiere Of Happy Feet Two At The Empire Leicester Square

What was with the obsession with owl necklaces? I don't know, but you were guaranteed to see these on every other girl at the mall, at school, and even on red carpets.

4.Wedge Sneakers

I blame Beyoncé and designer Isabel Marant for this trend taking off, and to be fair, some of them were pretty cute. But a lot of them were decidedly not cute, and making sneakers into a heel takes away from the comfort of wearing sneakers, so please don't bring these back.

5.Spiked Shoes

It didn't matter if these were made by Christian Louboutin — they were a crime against fashion. The cheap knockoffs were even worse.

6.Harem Pants

Alli Simpson arrives at the 2013 Radio Disney Music Awards at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on April 27, 2013 in Los Angeles, California

I mean, points for comfort, because breezy pants always feel nice. But there was literally no shoe that looked good with these, which was probably because they were hideous.

7.Skull Print Scarves

Actress Christie Carlson Romano attends the launch of the new T-Mobile Sidekick LX at The Clubhouse on October 16, 2007 in Los Angeles, California

Everyone was wearing these, making the skull and crossbones no longer just a pattern for the emo and goth kids to don. But nothing kills a trend like having it turn over to the mainstream, and the skull and crossbones pattern never recovered.

8.High Low Skirts and Dresses

Annemarie Eilfeld attends the Smago Award 2014 at Best Western MOA Hotel on November 26, 2014 in Berlin, Germany

This cut of dress was not flattering or appealing, but people really seemed to love it. Is it really that hard to choose between a mini skirt and a maxi dress?!

9.Metallic Leggings

TV personality Amanda Seales attends the American Airlines and BlackAtlas.com launch party at The Studio Musuem on August 3, 2012 in New York City

2013 was a year for all different kinds of leggings, including metallic leggings. I don't know if we can pin this on American Apparel, but this is a trend we should have nipped in the bud right away.

10.Coachella Chic

Music fan attends day 2 of the 2014 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival at the Empire Polo Club on April 12, 2014 in Indio, California

It's one thing to rock cutoffs, flower crowns, and fringy shirts at a music festival. It's another to start rocking a Coachella-chic wardrobe everywhere. There's a time and place for everything, and anywhere but a music festival is not the place for that style.

11.Mesh Cutout Tops

This one, I think we can pin on American Apparel. Their deep V mesh cutout dress was inescapable back in the day. Truthfully, it wasn't as sexy as people wanted to believe it was, and it was just uncomfortable.

12.Clip-in Feathers

Ke$ha attends the NRJ Music Awards 2010 at Palais des Festivals on January 23, 2010 in Cannes, France

This was one I never understood, because truly, what was the point? It wasn't like you could straighten or curl the feather to incorporate it into your hairstyle. It was just a weird afterthought that never looked right.

13.Pleather Jeans

Jessie J walks down the street in faux leather leggings and sunglasses

The rebranding of pleather (considered cheap) as vegan leather (considered eco-friendly and smart) should be studied. Honestly, maybe it already has been. Either way, don't bring back the pleather jeans! They're too hot and binding.

14.Neon Everything

Actress Chloë Grace Moretz attends the 39th Annual People's Choice Awards at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on January 9, 2013 in Los Angeles, California

It's fine to have a little bit of neon in your outfit once in a while, but making neon the focal point of your outfit was a mistake too many of us made in the early 2010s. There are other ways to incorporate bright colors without blinding anyone!

15.Bandage Dresses

Tali Duclaud arrives at Telemundo's Premios Tu Mundo Awards 2014 at American Airlines Arena on August 21, 2014 in Miami, Florida

Again, a flattering silhouette is nice, but bandage dresses went too far in 2013. There was no reason for them to ever look like, well, the photo above.

16.Low Cut Mens Shirts

Russell Brand meets fans and signs copies of his book 'Revolution' at Waterstone

No one wants to see your chest hair. Never, ever bring these back.

17.Acid Wash Jeans

This was one of those trends that came back from the 1980s to haunt us, because really, how were acid-washed jeans ever considered cool?

18.Excessive Floral Print

Kaley Cuoco is seen on August 11, 2014 in Los Angeles, California

Floral print was inescapable in 2013, and it wasn't even the cute kind. It was like the kind you see on your grandma's couch. No idea how that became a thing.

19.Lace Cutout Dresses

Actress Hailee Steinfeld arrives at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards at The Shrine Auditorium on August 10, 2014

There was truly no reason for us to be wearing so much lace, and in such casual situations, too. Let's keep lace where it belongs: under our clothes.
