Southwestern District Health Unit Hosts 11th Annual Kids Health and Safety Fair

May 3—DICKINSON — In a bid to instill health and safety knowledge in children through enjoyable activities, the Southwestern District Health Unit is gearing up for the 11th annual Kids Health and Safety Fair. Scheduled for Thursday, May 9th, from 3-6 PM at the West River Ice Center in Dickinson, this year's event promises an exciting zoo-themed experience for all attendees.

Children and their families are encouraged to don their favorite zoo animal costumes for a day filled with games, snacks, and unexpected encounters with real zoo animals. From informative sessions on pool and sun safety to guidance on emergency procedures like when to dial 911, the fair offers a diverse range of activities aimed at educating young minds.

Among the highlights are traditional favorites such as the bean bag toss and interactive sessions with representatives from the Dickinson Fire Department, who will showcase their iconic red fire truck. Attendees can also look forward to FREE door prizes, bouncing castles, and a tantalizing array of food served up by "The Professionals" Relay for Life team. They will be serving pulled beef sandwiches, hotdogs, tacos and other goodies.

Some of the long list of exhibitors and contributors includes Dickinson Eagles Club, CHI St. Alexius Health, Sanford Health Dickinson Clinic, Entertainment Explosion, Marathon Petroleum Company, the KIDS Program and much more. All of these entities are advocating for health and safety and will be teaching kids in some form or fashion with games and interactive lessons.

"The words have gotten out about this health fair. Last year we had 32 exhibitors, this year we have 42 and we had to have a waiting list," Sherry Adams co-chairman said. "It is just a good chance for all the partners to come together and be able to provide this opportunity for all these kids. All of these exhibitors and participants work in some capacity with children and so that also helps them see their clients in a different atmosphere."

Live music will infuse the atmosphere with energy, courtesy of the Dickinson High School jazz band. Additionally, beloved Disney Princesses and Toy Story characters like cowboy Woody and cowgirl Jessie will be in attendance, eager to greet all the kids, along with some zoo characters.

With the overarching theme centered around the zoo, organizers encourage attendees to unleash their creativity and dress up as their favorite zoo animals or in zoo-related costumes. However, all costumes are welcome, as the primary goal remains fostering a fun and educational environment for children to learn about health and safety.

Admission to the fair is FREE, ensuring that every child departs with both a smile and newfound knowledge essential for their well-being. Mark your calendars for this unmissable event aimed at empowering the next generation with the tools they need to stay safe and healthy.

"We are excited because this looks to be our health fair yet, with over 42 exhibitors and sponsors and a large group of partners all coming together to collaborate," Chairman Marlys Walter said. "It is a good opportunity to get out for a few hours, enjoy some family-fun and all while being able to interact with different partners."
