Why visit Washington, D.C.?

The nation's capital is abundant in monuments dedicated to U.S. history and politics. Many of those landmarks, from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial and monuments for World War II and Vietnam War veterans, can be found in National Mall, an area with more than 100 monuments and memorials that the National Park Service describes as "America's front yard."

Washington is also popular for its cultural and historic experiences, like the 17 Smithsonian Institution museums and galleries — all free of charge — that include the Museum of Natural History, the Air and Space Museum, the American History Museum and the National Zoo. Georgetown, the city's oldest neighborhood, is a prime shopping, dining and nightlife hub.

Southwest's Phoenix-Washington flights will debut near the end of the peak of the cherry blossom season, one of the most popular times to visit.
