South Mountain Spring festival fires up for weekend of rural lifestyle experiences in Washington County

GAPLAND, Md. (DC News Now) — Looking for a weekend getaway? Take a trip to Maryland’s South Mountain Corridor for the Spring Festival, as its artisans say it will be well worth the time.

It’s a chance to experience that laid-back, casual but creative, lifestyle.

Relief from city living will introduce out-of-towners to metal craftsman David Dufficy. He uses a 2,000 degree coal forge and anvil to heat and shape metal. It’s great for creating mementos like a memorable key chain.

“You’ll see some amazing craftwork going on here,” Dufficy said. “It will probably be a nice time to see some things you don’t see often.”

Kirke Martin is passionate about his pottery creations. His coffee mugs are popular merchandise at specialty coffee shops in Frederick and Washington counties.

His creative talents can be witnessed during the festival which is being held from May 18 to May 19.

“You can seethe in-studio experience,” Martin said of the events he and other artisans attend. “The lifestyle that we live. The creativity never stops.”

He says the creativity never ends.

“At one of these kinds of events, people can live the studio experience, the lifestyle that we live,” he added.

Homemade soaps made from scratch with fresh goat milk can also be purchased at the event as Alice Orzechowski with Caprikorn Goat Farm, has the process down to a fine science.

“It’s made with fresh goat milk and we are a dairy so we have to meet the high quality standards on the milk that we use,” says Orzechowski.

The weekend also features jewelry artisans, landscape painters, vintners, distillers and creators of specialty ciders.
