Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes are one of Hollywood’s most famous couples, yet despite their mega fame, they’re one of the most notoriously private pairs — so much so that they relocated outside of Los Angeles to give their daughters a more normal life.

On Monday, a source spoke to People about the longtime couple’s Hollywood exit. “For them, the most important job is their girls,” the insider said of Gosling and Mendes’ daughters, Esmeralda, 9, and Amada, 7. The source continued, “Everything else comes second, and their girls are thriving. They left LA to live a bit further north, away from Hollywood.” The big reason for the move? “They didn’t want the girls to grow up around other celebrity kids,” the insider claimed.

Retaining As Much Privacy As Possible

While Gosling grew up a child star in the Mickey Mouse Club alongside pop icons including Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Justin Timberlake, Mendes didn’t rise to fame until adulthood. The culmination of their differing experiences interestingly led the couple to opt for a much more private life than many of their industry peers, and the source claimed they’re exceedingly happy with the path they’ve followed.

“Eva and Ryan love their life,” the insider continued. “It’s admirable how they’ve been able to create balance and boundaries. They care so much about their marriage and just want their girls to live a happy life.”

Mendes frequently faces questions about why she doesn’t support Gosling in person at red carpet events like the Oscars or his many movie premieres, and like the Hitch alum has asserted in the past, a second source told People it all comes down to the way the pair have decided to navigate their relationship.

“It truly seems they are surviving Hollywood as a couple, because of the way they‘ve handled being famous. They try their best to stay out of the spotlight,” the additional insider explained. They added, “Of course Eva is proud and excited for Ryan. She still sees it as a job though. It seems like a healthy way of living. They’re amazing as a couple and very happy together.”

A friend of Mendes’ also spoke with the outlet, shedding light on the former actress’ lack of interest in performative Hollywood events. “She’s moved past that part of her life for now — the glam and the red carpet and the photographers. It’s just not important to her,” they shared. “She knows that it’s part of Ryan’s job, but it’s not part of hers at the moment. She’s content doing her thing with her family,” the insider concluded.

Showing Support In Her Own Way

Mendes did show her support for her husband’s Oscars nomination and performance on Instagram, sharing a cheeky photo after his iconic, internet-breaking live rendition of “I’m Just Ken.” Posting a snap of herself in his dressing room wearing a black cowboy hat and a sparkly pink blazer, Mendes wrote, “You took Ken all the way to the Oscar’s, RG. Now come home, we need to put the kids to bed. 💋”

Earlier in the day, she also shared a video of herself posing outside Gosling’s dressing room. “Always by my man,” Mendes captioned the Reel, subtly letting the public know that just because she isn’t on the red carpet or in the live audience, she’s The Notebook star’s biggest fan — and she doesn’t have to prove it to anyone.
