It sounds like Antonio Gibson will be Washington’s kick returner in 2022
When Washington running back Antonio Gibson began working on special teams last week; most believed it was punishment for his lost fumble in the preseason opener against the Panthers.
Now, over a week later, it sounds like Gibson will handle kickoff return duties for the Commanders in 2022.
“I think you still need to see some more stuff, but you know, I think he is,” Rivera said Thursday when asked if Gibson was the No. 1 kick returner. “I do. I think he’s done a nice job.”
What a turn of events for Gibson.
Last year, despite his fumbling issues, Gibson rushed for over 1,000 yards. As a rookie in 2020, Gibson rushed for 795 yards and 11 touchdowns. However, the Commanders entered the offseason looking for another back to pair with Gibson and J.D. McKissic. Not to replace Gibson, but to give Washington depth and someone who can excel in short-yardage situations.
The Commanders selected Alabama running back Brian Robinson Jr. in the third round, and now it looks like Robinson may be Washington’s starting running back after a strong preseason.
Nothing is official, of course.
Rivera mentioned how Gibson returned kicks at Memphis and did a good job. He is correct. In Gibson’s final season at Memphis in 2019, Gibson averaged 28 yards per return and scored one touchdown on 23 returns.
Even if Robinson begins the season as Washington’s starting running back, Gibson will still have a significant role on offense.
