Sorry Folks, the 'Lizzie McGuire' Reboot Is No Longer Happening

The road to the Lizzie McGuire Disney+ revival has been marred with delays, shakeups, and interruptions since its star, Hilary Duff, first revealed she'd be slipping back into her orange platform sandals back in August 2019. And if 2020 wasn't bad enough, Duff took to Instagram today with an announcement that shattered the hearts of Lizzie fans everywhere (Sophie Turner included): The Lizzie McGuire reboot is canceled.

In a note posted to her 16.2 million Instagram followers, Duff explained that though multiple efforts were made to bring the series back, things just didn't work out behind the scenes.

"I’ve been so honored to have the character of Lizzie in my life. She has made such a lasting impact on many, including myself. To see the fans’ loyalty and love for her, to this day, means so much to me. I know the efforts and conversations have been everywhere trying to make a reboot work but, sadly & despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen," she wrote. She went on to explain that she wanted the reboot "to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It’s what the character deserves. We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with her. I’m very sad, but I promise everyone tried their best and the stars just didn’t align." Duff ended her note with a nod to the iconic "What Dreams Are Made Of" song from The Lizzie McGuire Movie. "Hey now, this is what 2020s made of."

This isn't the first time Duff expressed her frustration with the new direction of the reboot. Earlier this year, Duff shared that she wasn't a fan of Disney+ labeling the reboot as PG since the show would chronicle the life of Lizzie McGuire at 30 years old.

"I'd be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30-year-old's journey to live under a PG rating," she wrote at the time. "It's important that just as her experiences as a pre-teen/teenager navigating life were authentic, her next chapters are equally as real and relatable."

Under the news of the show's cancellation, celebrities rushed to support Duff. Turner wrote, "NO LIZZIEEEEEEEE NO." Same, Sophie. Same.
