With warmer temps (hopefully) on the horizon, now is a great time to start thinking about transitional footwear. Sorel is best known for its heavy-duty winter boots, but the Portland-based company also makes shoes that can see you through spring and beyond. Footwear for this fickle season will keep you dry without you overheating, and Sorel’s Madson II boot is built for the task.

The Madson II boot is available in four colors; it’s a dressy chukka boot style that’s also waterproof for peace of mind on cloudy days. Typically $190, it’s discounted by as much as 45%, dropping the price to $105.

Chukka boots are similar to desert boots; the ankle-cut style is a versatile, warm-weather-friendly option compared to heavier winter boots or sturdy work boots. Sorel’s take features a slightly dressy silhouette that works well with chinos and jeans, but the rugged lug sole is capable of handling wet or uneven ground.

The boots are seam-sealed with a waterproof leather upper to handle sudden showers. Two available styles are waterproof suede and two are waterproof leather, and they’re available in neutral shades of light and dark brown. When the forecast calls for heavy downpours, a pair of duck boots or rubber rain boots will still be your best bet, but Sorel’s Madson shoes can handle light rain. Since they don’t look like rain boots, they can be easily worn on sunny days and well into spring and even summer.

Shoppers were impressed with the comfort and performance of the boots, with one writing that they “fit like a dream out of the box. The waterproofing functions well.” Another found that they held up in notoriously damp Great Britain, writing that they bought the boots for “long walking days in the rainy, wet London weather” and adding that the boots “performed flawlessly” and “kept my feet dry and comfortable every day that included 3 to 5 miles of walking each day.”

Shoppers also appreciate the versatile aesthetics, with one calling the boots “stylish and comfortable” and adding that they “look great when wearing jeans, corduroys, and [khaki] pants.” Another called them “super comfortable” with a “nice balance of rugged vs. stylish.”

These wet-weather boots are ideal for whatever weather spring has in store. They’re available starting at $105, $85 off the list price, so act fast while most sizes are still in stock.
