Sophie Turner Says Emilia Clarke Was Responsible for the "Game of Thrones" Coffee Cup Error

"I mean look who it's placed in front of: Emilia Clarke. She's the culprit."

If you thought we were done talking about the Game of Thrones coffee cup-gate, think again.

The Starbucks cup that launched a thousand memes has come up in conversation yet again, with Sophie Turner accusing fellow costar Emilia Clarke of being the culprit behind the blunder. If you remember, fans quickly decided that Sophie was responsible, thanks to an eagle-eyed viewer who spotted the actor holding a strikingly similar cup while posing for a BTS pic with Bella Ramsey (AKA Lyanna Mormont).

But now, Sophie has professed her innocence, while pointing the finger back at Emilia. As noted by E! News, the actor portraying Sansa Stark discussed the now-iconic coffee cup while sitting down with Jimmy Fallon on Friday, May 10.

“Let’s clear this up,” Sophie said during her Tonight Show appearance, going onto address the supposedly damning photo of her holding a cup. “That's in a different scene. Also, we all have the same cups for all of our water and tea and everything, so…I mean look who it's placed in front of: Emilia Clarke. She's the culprit.”

Emilia has yet to directly respond to Sophie’s (all in good fun) accusation, though she did address coffee cup-gate in a funny Instagram earlier this week, writing: “The cup bearer does not drinketh the Starbucks tea.” And in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the actor denied being the cup owner, explaining: “I don’t even drink Starbucks. I have no idea whose it was!”

Let’s be honest, we may never know the truth, but that doesn’t take away from the hilarity of a lone Starbucks cup somehow finding its way onto the Game of Thrones set — and staying there throughout all of filming. And it’s not just the fans who were tickled by the goof; according to Sophie, after the episode aired, actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau texted his costars to say: “Great episode. Is that a coffee cup?” Touché, Jaime Lannister, touché.
