Sophie Turner Once Thought Joe Jonas Was “Way Above My League”

If Sophie Turner was ever a skeptic about love and marriage (she told Rolling Stone last March that before meeting Joe Jonas, she had been fully prepared to be single the rest of her life), she’s a full-on convert now.

The former Game of Thrones star opened up about her relationship with Jonas in the new cover story for Elle magazine, explaining that she’s gone from a dubious Jonas Brothers hater to an enamored J-Sister within just a few years’ time. “My friends and I were not Jonas Brothers fans,” she told the magazine. “There was this band in the UK called Busted. They had a hit called ‘Year 3000.’ It was amazing, and we were huge Busted fans. Then the Jonas Brothers covered the song and made it massive. And Busted broke up. We thought it was all the Jonas Brothers’ fault. So we hated them.”

But despite her and her friends’ annoyance at the boy band, Jonas’s name kept coming up in conversation, with multiple different friends and colleagues in the industry insisting that the pair should meet. In 2016, for instance, a producer on a movie set Turner was working on told the actress, “You should meet Joe Jonas. I feel like you would really get along with this guy.” It turned out that the producer was once a neighbor of the Jonas family.

Then, at a business meeting, Turner met Jonas’s agent, who told her, “You remind me of one of my clients. I bet you two would really hit it off.”

Finally that same year, Jonas was touring in the UK, and he reached out to Turner to see if she might want to spend time together while he was in town. Still not completely sold on the singer, Turner agreed to a meet-up—but brought a bunch of her male friends along for security, just in case he turned out to be a jerk.

“I brought all my guy friends to come with me to meet him, because in the back of my mind I still worried that he could be a catfish—or I don’t know what,” she explained. “I just wanted my guy friends with me. I had my rugby boys. I was safe.” In the end, however, Turner hardly needed her friends’ protection: she and Jonas hit it off right away at a dive bar where they danced for a bit and then ended up talking for hours and hours. And the rest, as Jophie fans know, is history.

The pair got engaged in October 2017, and then had not one, but two weddings in 2019—the first in Las Vegas in May following the Billboard Music Awards, and the second in France toward the end of June. Now, the couple is reportedly expecting their first child together.

“With Joe, I always felt like I was the one who was punching, like, way above my league,” Turner told Elle candidly. “And I still feel like that. He’s so handsome, talented, funny, charismatic. I’m really lucky to be with him and have someone like him want to be around me and spend time with me.”

And now that the couple has experienced marriage, she’s feeling hopeful about love and about what this next phase of their lives together can bring. “I feel like the only thing that’s changed for me is having this incredible sense of security,” she said. “Just the word husband and the word wife—it just solidifies the relationship. I love being married. I think it’s wonderful. I’m sure we’ll have our hiccups and our different things. But right now, it’s like the security and the safety is everything.”
