Sophie Turner clarified one of the most controversial scenes from the final season of Game of Thrones

Over the course of HBO’s Game of Thrones, Sansa Stark repeatedly faced trauma and abuse. Ultimately, she overcame these trials and grew into a strong, capable ruler. But viewers often criticize the way the show addressed her past, particularly her rape in Season 5. In Season 8, fans—including celebrities like Jessica Chastain—condemned Game of Thrones for a scene in which Sansa appeared to say that her victimization made her stronger.

Now that the series is over, Sophie Turner is defending that scene, saying that many misinterpreted the message.

Turner sat down for an interview with The New York Times, published on May 20th. When interviewer Jeremy Egner pointed out that Sansa’s lines in the scene “almost seemed to be crediting abusers with making you who you are,” she said that was not the message the show was trying to convey.

She added:

Turner also discussed Sansa’s coronation as Queen in the North in the final episode, saying that she “loved it.”
