This is the latest game made by FromSoftware, and it's been absolutely inescapable since its release. There's a reason for that: It's very, very good. Whether it's the notoriously difficult gameplay, the huge world to explore or its expansive story co-written by Game of Thrones scribe George R.R. Martin, there's something here for all players. Even newbies have been getting in on the fun, and if you haven't jumped in yet, it's now on sale at Amazon for only $50!

The early reviews are enthusiastic: "Whether you're exploring a massive world, killing aggressive monsters, getting floored by fantastically powerful bosses, or having some guy with a pot on his head kill said bosses for you, Elden Ring will constantly bring you the most intense entertainment of the 9th-gen! Dark Souls and Bloodborne fans, or even just fans of the open-world genre, will easily fall in love with this game, even if you end up being the controller-throwing type!"

Are you a big fan of films like Groundhog Day and Palm Springs? You know, where the main character gets stuck living the same day over and over again until they get it right? Deathloop is like that too, except each day is an action-packed string of assassinations. Can you eliminate all eight targets before time is up? Or are you going to have do it again, learning from your mistakes? This was one of the best titles of 2021 and right now you can save $35 on it.

The reviews are glowing, too, with at least one player saying, "It's a very different type of game with a lot of detail and unique mechanics. It takes a little time to get the hang of it, but once you do, it's worth it! [...] It caters to just about any play style, so whether you're a guns-blazing type, a stealth and snipe player or someone who likes to hack devices for a strategic ambush, you can. Highly recommend if you want to challenge yourself to learn something very unique and satisfying!"

New in 2021, Lost Judgment is a detective story that will have you walking the streets of Tokyo and Yokohama to solve a murder mystery. Sneak around, get into fights and even track down hidden items with your trusty canine — this is a game that really lets you step into the shoes of a private detective. And even though it’s only three months old, this thrilling title is over 50 percent off at Amazon right now — only $30.

Reviews from players are good, with one calling it "the best game of 2021." And, while this is technically a sequel (it's part of the Yakuza game world), you can still enjoy it even if you've never played the original, as one shopper says they "highly recommend this game for mature gamers. It has a great storyline and fun mini games as well. I haven’t played the first one and started on this one but will definitely get that as well." If you love mysteries, this might be right up your alley!

The Guardians of the Galaxy game takes everything you love about the hit movies — the goofy characters, the wild combat, and the classic tunes — and puts you in the cockpit. Fans of the GOTG comics will love the way the characters look like their on-page counterparts, while newcomers and vets alike will love the ability to make choices that affect the story.

This is one of the best games of 2021, and the five-star reviews on Amazon back that up. This player says it's a "great narrative game, gameplay is amazing and if you want a challenge, put it on highest difficulty." He adds, "the soundtrack is amazing and the [first] hour of the game is my favorite. I didn't get to the main story till like 30 minutes in cause I was listening to the songs." Sounds like it doubles as a jukebox, and you can snag it for 50 percent off at Amazon!

Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Viking on a ship approaching a church on shore

Vikings are cool, and we’re not just saying that because they live way up north! This epic title lets you live the life of a Norseman… or Norsewoman (you get to choose your gender). You can go on raids, fight vicious battles and experience a grand, sweeping saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe. But you don’t need to be familiar with the series to get started — in fact, this game is a great starting point for this immersive series, with a fun history lesson to boot!

Gamers certainly love it, with one shopper calling it “unique” because you have a raven... and wear outfits resembling a Viking. "The game is very long, and I have spent a lot of time playing it.”

Hades

Zagreus in the Underworld
Be the guide to the Underworld. (Photo: Amazon)

This indie hit title scored a whopping 4.9 out of 5 stars with Amazon reviewers — no wonder it’s won so many awards! This game places you into the shoes of Zagreus, son of the Greek god Hades. Zagreus just wants to get the heck out of the underworld, and it’s up to you to guide him through randomly generated levels with his trusty sword to hack and slash anyone who gets in his way.

You’ll die a lot, but that’s okay, as this player notes: “The game also gets progressively easier as you play and unlock permanent upgrades, so each death feels less like a defeat and more like a step towards your ultimate goal.” And one shopper calls it a “masterpiece" that “deserves every single award it has won” because it’s “the best game to exist in the last decade, bar none.”

Licensed games like this don’t always have the best reputation, but this title managed to blow all expectations out of the water, along with inspiring a huge dose of nostalgia for kids raised on Nicktoons. Ren, Stimpy, SpongeBob, Aang and Korra — the gang’s all here, and ready to throw down in frantic, fast-paced combat. You can snag this recent title at a decent discount too, 40 percent off at Amazon!

One grownup who bought it for the kids at her local YWCA says: "They all love it despite how different they are in experience levels in playing video games... It warms my heart watching them cooperatively play together and enjoy it. I really do recommend this game. It also helps that the characters are all popular and featured on Nickelodeon. The kids all know exactly who is who."
