Dolly Parton is heading back to the silver screen. Sony Pictures has landed the rights to bring the Smoky Mountain Songbird to theaters in the movie adaptation of Run Rose Run, the No. 1 New York Times bestseller that Parton co-authored with James Patterson. While Hello Sunshine was already on board to produce the film, this news brings us one step closer to seeing Dolly step into the role of country music veteran Ruthanna on the screen. As Deadline reports, this will be Parton's first starring role since 1992's Straight Talk, where she played the no-nonsense radio host Shirlee Kenyon.

Parton took to social media yesterday to announce the partnership herself. "Run, Rose, Run is going to the big screen! I can't wait to make this dream come true with @HelloSunshine, @SonyPictures, and some of my favorite people, @JamesPattersonBooks and @ReeseWitherspoon," she wrote in an Instagram post.

If you haven't read it yet, Parton's first novel follows the story of AnnieLee, an aspiring singer-songwriter who moves to Nashville to pursue her dreams of becoming a country star, guided by Ruthanna. However, AnnieLee's songs hide a dark secret and a past that may destroy her future.

Not only will Parton star in the film, but she will also serve as producer. She will serve alongside Patterson and Hello Sunshine's Reese Witherspoon (maybe you've heard of her?) to bring the thriller to theaters.

The three-time Guinness World Record holder, 11-time Grammy winner, two-time Academy Award nominated singer-songwriter, and 2020 Southerner of the Year, is no stranger to hard work. In addition to starring in and producing the film, Dolly also starred in the audiobook version of this tale and wrote a companion album of the same name, featuring 12 original songs all written, recorded, and produced by Parton. If you're surprised by Parton taking on all those roles, don't be: As Parton once said, "I'm not going to limit myself just because people won't accept the fact that I can do something else."
