When did dips and sauces go from simple flavor enhancers to the ingredient that makes or breaks a fast-food meal? Maybe it all started with the chicken McNugget and McDonald's dipping sauces.

However it started, dips and sauces are big business, and the lines between ingredients and condiments are now blurred. Chick-fil-A fans can't imagine leaving without several packets of classic Chick-fil-A sauce for their meal. And who would eat an Arby's Roast Beef Sandwich without Horsey Sauce?

These condiments-turned-necessities are perhaps even more important when it comes to French fries. While there are still those who love ketchup with their fries, now anything goes for a French fry dip (including vanilla shakes).

So it's no surprise that when Sonic updated its fries, it didn't just improve their taste; it improved their dip functionality.

Sonic’s New Groovy Fries and Groovy Sauce

By mid-May, Sonic’s new Groovy Fries and Groovy Sauce will be in Sonic locations nationwide. The new fries will have grooves designed to better grip dips and sauces, including the new Groovy Sauce. This new sauce combines the flavors of ranch and herbs with the mild spice of Sriracha and will be free with every fry order.

A thread on Reddit has Sonic diners divided about the shape of Groovy Fries, which many see as just another name for crinkle-cut fries.

Those who were not so happy commented that crinkle-cut fries were their "least favorite" and that they reminded them of "cheap frozen fries." One optimistic Redditor seemed more willing to try them, saying, "Sonic has the best tots or Onion Rings (imo) around, but in the 30+ years I've lived within a mile of one, I've only ever bothered to order their fries maybe twice."

According to someone who works at a Sonic location, the Groovy Fries will completely replace the current fries. "I think these are taking over as the new fries," they said. Some Sonics like mine have distribution centers that already ran out of the old stock, so we are only getting these now."

Until they're available to try, there's no way of knowing if the new fries will be any better than the old fries. But as long as there is plenty of dip or sauce to slather on them, it may not matter.
