SONIC Just Announced Two Limited-Time Menu Items Elvis Would Have Loved
The mashup will be available as a cheeseburger and milkshake for just four weeks beginning January 8, Presley's birthday.
SONIC’s brand-new menu items have us dusting off our blue suede shoes.
As the story goes, Elvis once ate a life-changing sandwich at the Colorado Mine Company called the Fool’s Gold Loaf—a concoction that comprised a jar of peanut butter, a jar of jelly, and a whole pound of bacon. (Enamored, Elvis even hopped on his private jet and flew to Colorado for seconds when a craving hit.) The King went on to eat many peanut butter and bacon sandwiches—his version included sliced or mashed banana and was fried in a skillet—through his lifetime.
Now, SONIC’s new menu items have us thinking of the kid from Tupelo. The drive-in fast food chain, based in Oklahoma City, just announced a brand-new Peanut Butter Bacon SuperSONIC Double Cheeseburger and Peanut Butter Bacon Shake that will be available for four weeks beginning January 8, which happens to be the King's birthday.
Even SONIC acknowledges that the flavor combination gives off “this-seems-weird-but-I-have-to-try-it” flair, as Vice President of Culinary & Menu Innovation Mackenzie Gibson shared in a press release. “Peanut butter and bacon is not a combination you’d expect on a cheeseburger and you definitely wouldn’t think to combine these flavors into a shake, but at SONIC, we ignore what everyone else considers normal,” Gibson said.
The Peanut Butter Bacon SuperSONIC Double Cheeseburger includes two 100% beef patties “layered with creamy peanut butter, crispy bacon, grilled onions, and melty cheese on a toasted bakery bun.” The milkshake pairs peanut butter and crispy bacon with vanilla soft serve, whipped cream, and a cherry.
Guests can try this Elvis-approved flavor combination through February 4 at their local SONIC drive-in. And, to make things sweeter, a portion of every shake (also drinks and slushes) supports local schools through the SONIC Foundation which has distributed more than $27 million to classrooms since 2009.
If peanut butter and bacon were good enough for The King, we might just have to give these wacky menu items a whirl.
