Sonic Just Announced a New Limited-Edition Drink

And it tastes out of this world.

There’s an out-of-this-world new drink coming to Sonic locations nationwide in celebration of the upcoming North American total solar eclipse, which will darken skies on April 8. The Blackout Slush Float hits Sonic Drive-Ins on March 25, and it’s a good idea to get your first taste fast, because the chain is also giving out free solar eclipse viewing glasses with every Blackout Slush, while supplies last.

Sonic Introduces New Blackout Slush Float

Sonic’s Blackout Slush Float sounds like a cup of otherworldly deliciousness. The all-black slush is cotton candy- and dragon fruit-flavored, and is topped with creamy white soft-serve ice cream and blue and purple galaxy-themed sprinkles.

In a press release about the new Sonic beverage, Mackenzie Gibson, vice president of culinary and menu innovation at Sonic, explained that the drink was inspired by the fact that there are over 400 Sonic locations in areas where the eclipse will be visible.

“We thought, what better way to create some fun for our fans as they experience this unique event than by introducing a new treat that’s as awe-inspiring as the eclipse itself,” Gibson said.

Another star-crossed tidbit about the Blackout Slush Float? For the release of the drink, Sonic is partnering with NASA astronaut and Sonic superfan Terry Virts, a veteran of two space flights and three spacewalks who has witnessed an eclipse from the International Space Station (ISS). Virts, an ISS commander, says he’ll be watching the 2024 total solar eclipse “from his local Sonic in Texas.”

In addition to wearing proper protective eyewear, like the eclipse-viewing glasses Sonic is giving away with the Blackout Slush Float, Virts has some tips for watching the April 8 eclipse. Most importantly, it’s important to know how rare of an occurrence the event is—almost as rare as an all-black, soft-serve-topped slush at Sonic.

“It only happens every one-to-two decades,” Virts explained in the press release. “The last happened in 2017 and the next won’t be until 2044.”

While Sonic Drive-In welcomes guests in the eclipse-viewing path to watch from their own local Sonic locations, the chain suggests getting your slush and those free eclipse glasses closer to the March 25 release date, since glasses are only available while supplies last.

And the eclipse-themed fun doesn’t end at Sonic after the eclipse. The Blackout Slush Float will be available at Sonic Drive-In locations through May 5.
