Son of founder of The Rendezvous BBQ joint in Memphis dies

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The Rendezvous restaurant says the son of the founder of the famed BBQ joint in Memphis, Tennessee, has died. Nick Vergos was 67.

The restaurant said in a statement posted Thursday on Twitter that Nick Vergos died after battling cancer.

Nick Vergos' father Charlie founded The Rendezvous, which at first sold ham and cheese sandwiches before moving on to BBQ ribs and pulled pork. Located in a basement in downtown Memphis, the restaurant has attracted loyal locals and hungry tourists for decades.

Nick Vergos and his siblings took over the restaurant when their father died. Nick Vergos was a dedicated ambassador of Memphis-style BBQ and he twice cooked in the James Beard house in New York.

The Rendezvous' statement called Nick Vergos "a restaurant icon, a philanthropist, an amazing chef."
