This weekend, Solange Knowles made her televised performance debut on Saturday Night Live. The younger Knowles performed two songs from her latest album, A Seat at the Table.

Solange teased the inspiration behind the night’s three beauty looks a week ago with a mood board featuring women including Nina Simone, Diana Ross, Cher, and her sister, Beyonce.

Opening with Cranes in the Sky, Solange wore an intricately braided and beaded headpiece that took over 40 hours to construct. She followed with a woven hair look and finally, a big, natural blowout.

Solange adopted Diana Ross’s signature hairstyle to perform Don’t Touch My Hair. The profound lyrics stress the pride Solange feels about her natural hair, and the look was a perfect fit.

She accompanied her big hair with soft, dewy skin, bushy, arched brows, and white body paint and eye accents. The look was the most subtle of the three, but perhaps the most meaningful.
