As Robert Frost once said, "Nothing gold can stay." It's true of a flower's first bud, it's true of the early dawn light, and it's true of beauty products. When Soft Services launched its first hand cream, Theraplush, in 2022, I instantly fell in love. From the sculptural packaging to the dry cuticle-erasing formula, it was everything I wanted in a hand cream and more. And I wasn't alone, as the cream grew a loyal following and vent viral on TikTok and Instagram.

Unfortunately, less than a year into our relationship, Theraplush was temporarily discontinued in March 2023. Fast forward to January 9, and the brand has announced that Theraplush is back with a new and improved packaging system. Read on for everything you need to know about the restock.

The Product

As a refresher, the team at Soft Services started developing Theraplush in 2020, inspired by the increase in hand washing. Instead of creating a formula that needs to be applied multiple times a day, Theraplush only needs to be applied before bed to restore and transform hands. The formula contains retinol and colloidal oatmeal and creates a "gloving" finish to wrap hands in moisture.

As I said in my original review of the product, Theraplush's texture is unlike anything I've ever tried before. It's thick—though not as rich as, say, La Mer—and has almost a waxy drag that really needs to be worked into the skin. It definitely leaves a residue—which I'm fine with since it's the last step before bed—but isn't greasy, it's more like a waxy, almost powdery feeling. The brand describes it as "gloving," and it's the perfect word. By morning, it's totally soaked in, with no coating left behind. Instead, my hands are noticeably softer and less dry, and while I don't struggle with spots on my hands, they do look just all-around better.

The Update

The biggest change in the Theraplush relaunch is an updated packaging system—which comes in a new bright yellow shade—to prevent any contamination or mold issues. After Soft Services received reports from four customers who discovered mold in the product's packaging in 2022, they urged fans to discard the product immediately. Though the brand said there were no reports of adverse reactions to the mold, the company paused production of Theraplush until they had full confidence they could correct and prevent the issue.

Today marks the product's triumphant return. While the original formula was incredible, Theraplush's real appeal—at least for me—was the gorgeous vessel. The refillable pump was modeled after ancient jade objects, and it showed. Not only was it created to look beautiful on your bedside table, but to encourage use—"best used as the very last step before going to sleep, the user can take off jewelry, place on the dipped surface of the magnetized lid, easily remove it to pump out an application of cream, and 'close' the lid again with no need to handle cumbersome packaging with freshly-moisturized hands," said the brand in the original release.

As far as the formula, expect mostly the same hand cream you know and love, plus increased levels of panthenol for more moisture and a strengthened preservative system. The case and pod are available for $62, the case and extra pod are available for $98, and refill pods are available for $36.
