With every TikTok and Instagram that Sofia Richie Grainge shares, the internet’s infatuation with her grows. She has launched so many beauty and fashion trends and It products over the last few years—her slicked-back bun tutorial was liked over two million times, and she sold out the cream blush she wore on her wedding day. There would be no revival of the “quiet luxury” aesthetic without her, as she epitomizes it. Now, the 25-year-old is giving us another trend to obsess over: fragrance layering.

“My go-to fragrances are Jo Malone English Pear & Sweet Pea and English Pear & Freesia, because they are both super fresh,” Richie Grainge, the latest ambassador for the British brand, tells Bazaar. “What I also love—which I don’t feel like I’m able to do with many scents—is to layer and pair them on top of each other. I’ve had so much fun playing with the scents and mixing them, but without it feeling heavy or like I’m wearing too much perfume.”

We got the details on how Richie Grainge creates her signature fragrance cocktail, her love of baking, and how her sister Nicole Richie influenced her fresh, luxurious taste in scents.

How do you decide what fragrance to put on?

For me, it’s about the time of day. I like to wear close to nothing or something very light during the day. English Pear & Sweet Pea is definitely that daytime scent for me. It’s the perfect base during the day, because it’s so light and beautiful. Plus, it’s really easy to build on top of into the nighttime. At night, I love to go a bit heavier. So that’s when I’ll really start playing and layering different scents.

What is your first memory with fragrance?

Two things: My parents would always burn so many candles in our house, so I always have this scent of my childhood home that plays back in my head when I think of my first time with scent. But also, my mom had this really beautiful vanity with tons of perfumes on it, and as a kid, I would go into her vanity and spray them all over me and have an allergy attack.

How would you describe the smell of your childhood home, and is it something you’ve brought into your own home?

This partnership with Jo Malone has come so organically to me, just because I am a genuine Jo Malone fan. I’ve been burning Jo Malone in my home, specifically Lime Basil & Mandarin, for literally five years. So when this partnership came about, I was like, “Oh my god, you guys are my signature home scent.” It’s been really fun to work with them and to get to know the brand better, because I am such a genuine fan and have it burning in my house at all times. I burn it throughout my entire home. So do my in-laws, actually, which is kind of how I was introduced to the scent.

It sounds like they have good taste.

Great taste.

Speaking of, your wedding this summer rivaled a royal wedding. What was your scent routine for your wedding weekend?

When I think back to my wedding, I think about the nature smells that I played off of, whether it was roses, peonies, or the ocean. I really wanted to wear light scents that tied into where we were and the events that we were hosting.

Who is the best-smelling person you know?

My sister [Nicole] has always smelled amazing. I remember when I was a kid, she would make her scent with oil rollerball perfumes, and I was obsessed with how she smelled—and I still am. She still wears that same scent. She truly is amazing smelling.

English Pear & Sweet Pea definitely pulls from food and the scents associated with food. What scents make you hungry?

Oh, every smell.

Are you more like sweet or savory?

I’m mostly attracted to savory, musky scents. I don’t really have a sweet tooth.

Are you a big cook?

I’m more of a baker. Even though I don’t have a sweet tooth, it’s meditative for me. Some people may paint, but when I want to disconnect, I bake. It’s like arts and crafts for me. Plus, my husband enjoys eating it, so it works out perfectly.

Does your husband have a favorite dessert that you bake?

He loves my apple crumble. I learned it a few years ago, and I’ve just started putting twists on it ever since. Now, it’s this cinnamon, apple, vanilla, delicious crumble. I wish I could make it for you right now, so you could try it.

That would make an amazing candle. It probably makes your house smell incredible.

Yes, that would be incredible. We’re brainstorming for 2024.

What is the last thing you smell before bed and the first thing you smell when you wake up?

First thing in the morning, I smell my matcha. But I’m with my dogs in the morning and in the evening, most of the time in the garden, so I am left with the scent of flowers. I’m always around the flowers in my garden, and by the trees in my backyard. There are tons of nature smells outside with my dogs.

Do you have a matcha routine or favorite one you get in the morning?

I order Alfred’s matcha every morning. It’s my go-to and has become my routine. I’m convinced that L.A. has the best matcha in the world.

Where would you ideally wear English Pear & Sweet Pea?

I typically wear it all day. I’m the type of girl who wakes up in the morning, showers, and puts my fragrance on immediately before I put my clothes—just directly onto my skin. I’ll do three sprays straight onto my skin, and that will last me throughout the day. Then, as the afternoon goes on, around three or four if I’m going meet my friends out for a drink or go to dinner, that’s when I will start layering on top. But I’m pretty much an all-day scent wearer.

Both of the English Pear scents make me want to travel to the English countryside. Is there anywhere that’s on your travel bucket list?

Yes, there are a few places that are on my bucket list. I’m dying to go to Bali. I’ve been to Japan, but I’d love to go back and explore more. When I went, it was for work, so it was super quick. I want to spend more time there. But an exact place that’s on the top of my bucket list is the Soho Farmhouse in London. That is my, hopefully, next out-of-the-country trip.

Well, you have to go and bring all of the English Pear fragrances with you.

Oh yeah, it’ll be a big English Pear trip.
