Sofia Coppola and Augustinus Bader Made the Chicest Tinted Lip Balm in Existence

Anyone who knows me knows about my obsession with Sofia Coppola: I love her films, her mind, her quiet nature, her French rockstar husband, her helicopter-chartering daughter, her designer-muse relationship with Marc Jacobs and, most relevant to this article, her personal style.

The excellent taste and precise visual language seen throughout her body of work are evident in her own outfits: There's a smart practicality and understated feminine glamour to her looks that I've always been inspired by. (For years, when debating a purchase, I would ask myself, "Would Sofia Coppola wear this?" — a habit that has saved me from a lot of buyer's remorse, I'm sure.) A perusal of her past red-carpet moments reveals that this nepo baby (not derogatory, in her case) never misses.

Aside from her timeless way of dressing, Coppola's consistently minimalist approach to beauty is likely another reason for this. She was doing "no-makeup makeup" long before it was the phrase on every makeup artist and beauty founder's tongue, and a luxurious new collaboration (that's still a lot more affordable than her last one) embodies that sensibility: She partnered with highly coveted skin-care brand Augustinus Bader to create tinted versions of the brand's beloved lip balm in three shades.

"The Bader lip balm is one of my favorites so I was excited when the brand agreed to collaborate on a tinted version," Coppola said, in a statement. "Shade 1 is based on a favorite sheer deep pink lipstick I hoarded after it was discontinued, that's easy and adds a brightening, subtle tint. Shade 2 is a red coral I like for summer or at the beach, and Shade 3 is a burnt, earthy plum."

"Professor Bader was delighted to receive Sofia's request to create a lip tint based on the AB balm she loved," added Charles Rosier, CEO and co-founder of Augustinus Bader.

Lip balm, tinted or not, is pretty much the only thing I ever wear on my lips, so within minutes of receiving the embargoed press blast in my inbox, I requested a sample of Shade 1 — and I'm obsessed.

It's as if Coppola made this product just for me, personally. It's not just the perfectly subtle (and buildable) wash of pink that I love. The formula of the balm itself is also excellent. It's almost eerily smooth as you glide it on and imparts that same next-level softness onto your lips thanks to a hydrating and nourishing blend of of shea butter, vitamin E and candelilla wax, plus plant-derived plumping agents and Augustinus Bader's proprietary TFC8® technology. Then, there's the very chic packaging — I was given an unbranded sample, but the retail version features a substantial, luxe gold tube customized with pink accents, including Coppola's handwritten initials.

It's become my go-to for a quick pre-Zoom-meeting lip, and I take it with me every time I leave the house. I'm obviously planning to collect every shade and, like Coppola, will be hoarding tubes of my favorite, in case it's ever discontinued.
