Sofia Carson Wears Tuxedo Blouse and Pants at Elie Saab Show During Paris Fashion Week

Sofia Carson has touched down in Paris for Fashion Week and, as you’d expect, her looks have been nothing less than perfection.

On March 2, she attended Elie Saab’s Fall 2019 ready-to-wear show and was snapped in her finest formalwear. Sofia stunned in a feathery coat over a white tuxedo blouse tucked into classic black tuxedo trousers. Eschewing a bow tie in favor of a shimmering beaded accent at the collar of her blouse, she kept her jewelry (by Djula) and makeup to a minimum and her hair was swept back into a classic French twist. For her shoes, she wore a pair of Roger Vivier Flower Strass Slingback pumps.

The look does, after all, have its roots in French fashion history. In his Autumn/Winter 1966 haute couture runway show, Yves Saint Laurent introduced his tuxedo for women, nicknamed Le Smoking. To his older, more conservative clientele, the concept of women in pants was so modern that it was initially rejected; according to the Musée Yves Saint Laurent, after the show, only one Le Smoking was sold. Saint Laurent then included a version of the tuxedo in his Rive Gauche ready-to-wear line, and his more adventurous patrons were quick to adopt it into their own wardrobes, solidifying the tux’s icon status with a certain je ne sais quoi.

Over fifty years later, the tuxedo is becoming firmly entrenched as a chic alternative to the formal sartorial mainstays of poofy ballgowns and slinky evening dresses — and, of course, all genders can wear any of the above. Cara Delevinge’s tuxedo stole the show at last year’s royal wedding, and Elsie Fisher has been rocking suits like no other this awards season.

There’s something bold and refreshing about these looks, and we’re absolutely obsessed with their clean and classic silhouettes. We’ve been long-time advocates of pants for prom, and Sofia Carson’s chic iteration is just another glam example of how to step up your formalwear game ahead of prom season. Wearing the pants has never looked so good.
