Denim is a timeless, year-round staple, but for some reason, it’s felt even more ‘in’ than usual this year. Where before we often stuck to the usual suspects — shorts in summer and long jeans fall through spring — 2023 has been all about denim done differently. In April, Dua Lipa introduced me to the sexiest version of the Canadian tuxedo when she wore a floor-length denim dress with a sky-high slit while Gisele Bündchen made the case for a denim jacket as a dress. But one style has dominated this past year — worn by everyone from Selena Gomez to Gabrielle Union — and Sofía Vergara just convinced me to finally get it.

With one selfie, the actress was able to change my tune on long denim skirts. Her all-denim look featured a classic, dark-wash button-down that perfectly matched her A-line midi skirt. It felt modern while still being modest, and elevated despite the casual nature of the material. And given that fall — and its cooler temps — are officially here, it’s nice to have a chicer alternative to a typical pair of jeans (while Vergara opted for pumps, I plan to rock mine with black knee-high boots).
