If you use a SodaStream, you might want to check the plastic bottle's expiration date. Yes, they do in fact expire, and according to the brand, using an expired one could increase the "risk of bottle failure which can result in personal injury and property damage."

TikTok user @jess_einaudi didn't realize she was using an expired bottle until she noticed a date label and looked up what it meant. She's now bringing attention it.

"After a certain amount of time these bottles lose their structural integrity so much so that there's a risk when you are carbonating your water that the bottle will explode on you," she said in the video. "How is this not more known?"

While there's no explicit mention of the bottles exploding in the SodaStream Terra user manual, it does have a series of "don'ts" to reduce the risk of "bottle failure" and "potential injury and property damage," which, one would think, could be caused by an exploding bottle. One of those "don'ts" is not using the plastic carbonating bottle after its expiration date.

For many users on TikTok, the bottle expiration dates were new information.

"Thnx—Just read mine, expired 2017. 😂," wrote one TikTok user.

"Can confirm, ours exploded and we broke a bunch of stuff in the kitchen," wrote another.

Meanwhile, another commented: "How do people not know this?! 😂"

Don't want to deal with checking expiration dates? Opt for the glass carafe instead—just make sure they're compatible with your machine. The glass carafes can be used "indefinitely" as long as they don't have any cracks or damage, according to the SodaStream support page. There's also a guide to the bottle warning icons, including the expiration date.

Back in 2017, SodaStream recalled some of its bottles that had the potential to explode, but no incidents were reported.

"So this is your PSA to read your little fine print on the back of your SodaStream bottle because yours is probably expired too," said Jess.
