How To Go Sockless with a Suit Right Now

By Megan Gustashaw.

There’s something that will always be cool (not to mention physically liberating) about going sockless in warmer weather, even if logo-ed out athletic socks and off-kilter dress socks are having a moment right now. Aaron Paul and Orlando Bloom are proof of that. Both actors stepped out in tailored clothing and bare ankles recently, and looked undeniably chill as a result—like they were on their way to a party (Orlando, we know, was headed to Chris Martin’s 40th birthday) instead of the office.

These easy, undone looks call to mind Haider Ackermann’s Spring 2017 show, which featured models in open shirts, cropped pants, and pointy dress shoes worn without socks. The designer was inspired by young kids who “just want to dance and party and be happy”, he told Vogue, which is exactly the mood the no-sock look conveys. Unprepared, spontaneous, like you may or may not be walking home after an all-night rager (no one’s socks are safe in those circumstances).

To modernize the look, do three things:

  1. Make sure every tailored item you have on isn’t slim-cut to the point of being tight. A loose shirt or relaxed suit will take the 2010 vibes right out of the bare-ankles look.

  2. Go for black dress shoes, instead of brown. Black feels more slick, less heritage-bro than brown.

  3. Slick your hair back, or wear it messy; anything but that severely parted old-timey bartender look.

After that all you have to do is rest easy knowing you look damn good.
