The #SockCurls Challenge Is the Latest TikTok Trend
Over the last months, TikTok has become a surprising destination for trending beauty products, parodies, tutorials, and hacks; and its latest craze, the #SockCurls, is nothing short of all.
The #SockCurls challenge is the newest trend populating the app and it involves creating ringlet curls out of something you wear on your feet. Yes, you read that right: TikTok users are using socks to curl their hair. If you're looking for a heatless curling method, you might want to pay close attention to on the video platform, because it's going to change your life.
Some beauty aficionados have been using this heatless method for a while. And while the technique may not be exactly new, TikTok has taken it to a newfound level of virality. Creators have been busy creating how-to tutorials non-stop recently. The hashtag currently has over 33 million views, which means practically everyone wants to know how boring old socks can create cascading curls.
According to TikTok, here's how it works: You separate your damp hair into sections and basically braid and twist it into a criss-cross pattern around long socks. Then, you let it fully dry so the curls have time to set.
Once your hair is dry, you undo the sock twists and run your fingers through your hair to separate, and voilá! Gorgeous curls! (It appears to be key to work with socks that are around the same length of your hair for best results.)
Three Allure editors tried making #SockCurls of their own and spoke to celeb stylist Justine Marjan, who noted that this isn't a new trend and that people have been creating curls without heat for ages using a variety of methods, from rags to foam rollers.
Justine's a fan of the sock method, especially as a way of changing up your look without heat damage. "I love seeing the sock curl trend on TikTok as an easy and accessible way for young girls to style their hair without heat at home," she told the mag. "TikTok has a much younger demographic, and I much prefer to see this trend than terrifying videos of girls burning their hair by mistake at home."
