Snowbird Shares First Glimpse Of Tram's New Rooftop Balcony

The warmer months mean a few things to the skiing community: goggle tans, pond skims, and parking lot grilling sessions. For ski areas, though, the last few months of the ski season are all about a more forward-thinking process -- renovations.

One such resort renovation, the installation of new balconies on Snowbird's iconic Aerial Tram, is nearing completion. See images of this awesome new development below.

When I first heard the words "tram," "balcony," and "Snowbird," I assumed that Snowbird was updating its tram stations to include balconies, not adding balconies to the tram's themselves.

But, much to my surprise, the balcony renovations weren't for the stations -- they were for the trams. As a bonus, the new tram cars also include three panels of glass flooring to improve the viewing experience.

And, for those wondering, these balconies are rideable. "Yes," Snowbird wrote in the caption to this post, "you can ride up there." That's what I'm talking about!

Although a press release from Snowbird suggests that the balconies are only for foot passenger summer use -- a bit of a bummer, but I doubt riding a tram balcony would be particularly fun during a snowstorm.

The balcony-adorned tram cars, the first of their kind in North America, will open for public use on June 17th, alongside a reopening of Snowbird's summer skiing operations. The resort plans to offer lift-accessed skiing weekends through the July Fourth long weekend, weather and conditions permitting.
