Find Out How Snow Unexpectedly Affected Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Wedding Plans

When Meghan Markle married Prince Harry back in May, it appeared to be a perfect day. It turns out, though, that there were a couple of (very minor) mishaps behind the scenes of their royal wedding.

Kensington Palace announced in April that the floral displays for the couple’s ceremony at St. George’s Chapel would be “created using locally sourced foliage, much of which will be taken from the gardens and parkland of The Crown Estate and Windsor Great Park.” The intention was to use flowers and plants that were in season and blooming in May.

And that’s where the problem arose. According to Vanity Fair, the couple revealed in a pre-recorded interview — which is now playing at the new A Royal Wedding: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex exhibition in Windsor Castle — that due to chilly April weather and some unexpected snow, there weren’t as many flowers as they had anticipated.

“We have a very small garden here that we had been planting things in the fall for, and what was really special, I think, was that the morning of the wedding, Harry went in and he picked some flowers to go into my bouquet, which was really beautiful and something that makes it sentimental and really meaningful,” Markle says in the clip.

Harry didn’t exactly have a bounty to choose from, though. “We didn’t have as many flowers in our little garden as we had hoped for because I think it snowed at Easter!” he recalls. “That kind of ruined the whole thing!”

The prince also felt there was another moment in the wedding prep that could have gone differently: the tiara selection. Harry accompanied his bride to Buckingham Palace to meet with his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, about the tiara she would wear on their wedding day, and while it was a special afternoon, he now wonders whether his presence was appropriate. In the recording, he jokes, “I shouldn’t have really been there.”
