The Sneakers at the Oscars Deserved an Award of Their Own

Though Oscars fashion is made of glitz and glamour—Charlize Theron’s egg-size 59.9-carat diamond earrings, anyone?—it’s often the more down-to-earth style moments that warm hearts and make a statement. This year, it was casual footwear that turned heads on the red carpet. Lion’s 8-year-old actor Sunny Pawar’s unusual shoe choice managed to cause a unison of awws in the Twitterverse: The pint-size actor passed up dress shoes in favor of a pair of bright black and green sneakers. And to add a jolt of contrast, he opted for highlighter yellow laces. It’s not the first time his funky sneakers have made a red carpet appearance: Pawar wore the fun footwear both at the Golden Globes and the NAACP 2017 Image Awards.

Later on in the night, sneaker fever hit an all-time high after Seth Rogen paid heartfelt homage to Michael J. Fox’s Back to the Future character, Marty McFly. After Fox and Rogen stepped out of a DeLorean on the stage, Rogen appeared to take his love for the film one step further: Along with the standard award ceremony’s tuxedo, the actor wore a pair of McFly’s Nike light-up sneakers. One doesn’t need to dig deep to get Rogen’s—or McFly’s—footwear, known as the Nike Mag shoe. The Back to the Future: Part II’s iconic sneaker was available for limited-edition release through a drawing in October 2016. No word yet if Pawar’s award-worthy and very adorable kicks will also soon be available for purchase.
