Get a Sneak Peak at Ellen Pompeo's Return to 'Grey's Anatomy'

Ellen Pompeo will return for Grey's Anatomy's two-hour season finale, “Wedding Bell Blues/Happily Ever After,” on May 18, and from the looks of it, her character is finally going to hash things out with Nick (Scott Speedman).

When we last saw the couple, Nick was unhappy with Meredith's decision to move to Boston, where she accepted a job offer by Jackson to work on Alzheimer's research. "I want you in my life if you want to be in my life," Meredith told him. "But if I have to choose, I'm going to pick me, I pick my kids, and I pick what's best for us, and I'm not going to beg you to love me." (Note the callback to the famous "pick me, choose me, love me" moment she once shared with Derek.)
Ultimately, Nick calls Meredith as she boards the plane to Boston and tells her he loves her, but she pretends she can't hear him and rushes off the phone.

So what's going to happen between Meredith and Nick in the finale? According to the episode description, "the attending surgeons fly to Boston, forcing a reunion between Nick and Meredith."
Which means the reunion will take place in Boston...
And judging from previews from the episode, the two will meet up at what appears to be a hotel...
...and perhaps Meredith will explain herself?
In April, showrunner Krista Vernoff told TVLine that she has "hope" for Meredith and Nick as a couple. "I think there’s a lot of good there," she said, "and fans will have to wait and see."
Elsewhere in the episode, it looks like we'll get to see Meredith hard at work in her new city.

The episode synopsis also promises Simone's wedding day and a "major turning point" in Jo and Link's relationship, but it doesn't seem like Pompeo will have anything to do with those storylines.
The actress last appeared on Grey's Anatomy on Feb. 23, 2023, marking her final episode as a series regular—and the end of an era for Grey's fans.
