Snapchat and Instagram Drop Giphy Integration After a Users Noticed a Racist GIF

"This blatant racism is unacceptable."

Snapchat and Instagram have removed Giphy features from their platforms, TechCrunch reported on Friday, March 9. The decision was reportedly made after users noticed a racist GIF that appeared within the search function on both social media apps.

According to the outlet, when the term "crime" was searched, a GIF containing a hateful racial slur appeared. Twitter user @LyaunaAugmon captured a screenshot of the GIF as it appeared on Instagram, writing: "This blatant RACISM @instagram @kevin is unacceptable."

Representatives for both Snapchat and Instagram confirmed to TechCrunch that they have removed their Giphy integration following knowledge of the racist GIF in question. Giphy, however, has not yet responded to TechCrunch's request for comment.

"As soon as we were made aware, we removed the GIF and have disabled Giphy until we can be sure that this won’t happen again ... while we wait for Giphy’s team to take a look at it," a spokesperson for Snapchat told the outlet.

Similarly, Instagram's representative said: "This type of content has no place on Instagram.... We have stopped our integration with Giphy as they investigate the issue."

Teen Vogue has reached out to Giphy for further comment.
