A Smokey and the Bandit Television Series Is in the Works

Start your engines, Smokey and the Bandit is getting the TV treatment!

Some of the biggest names in comedy are teaming up to bring a series based on the classic 1977 flick starring Burt Reynolds and Sally Field to a television near you.

Variety reports that the series is being written by Pineapple Express director David Gordon Green with Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane attached to executive produce.

The new take on the epic adventure is inspired by the genre of '70s and '80s drive-in double features and will “explore the crossroads where humble realities meet those larger-than-life, all in a blast of tailpipe exhaust.”

Smokey and the Bandit starred the late Reynolds in the iconic role of Bo “Bandit” Darville, a retired trucker payed to bootleg 400 cases of Coors beer across the country from Texarkana, Texas, to Atlanta. The movie was the second highest-grossing domestic film of 1977 and spurred numerous spin-offs.

Green, who was born in Arkansas and raised in Texas, called Smokey and the Bandit an early touchstone for him as a moviegoer.

“Growing up in the South, ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ was an iconic franchise for me," Green told Variety. “The legacy of these characters is a playground of swagger and sass that I’m excited to dig into.”

Casting for the TV series hasn’t been announced, and a network isn’t attached yet. We’ll keep you updated as more details emerge.
