At one point not too long ago, the watch was a man’s big jewelry moment on the red carpet. Now many find themselves searching every tuxedo lapel for a brooch. It’s not there? Did he forget? It seems almost unfinished.

Men and jewelry have a long history—think of all those royal portraits, think of the Pope!—but after falling out of favor for almost a century, jewels have once again become part of a man’s black tie wardrobe. Sometime it’s a lapel pin, sometimes a necklace worn tightly against the collar of a dress shirt. There are earrings, rings, stacked bracelets. And yes, watches too.

Tonight it was Will Smith and his Cartier brooch that caught the jewelry world’s attention. Partly because at first we couldn’t tell what it was. There was something glittering against his tie. Was it a brooch? A tie pin? It was the best kind of jewelry statement, strong and subtle at the same time. Texts were sent. Images zoomed in on. Emails delivered. It was an earring.

The French house has proven a favorite for men in search of a jewelry identity: Timothee Chalamet in 2020 in a Ruby brooch and satin bomber and again tonight in a Panther necklace against a bare chest. (I loved it) Rami Malek in lapel pin. Kodi Smit McPhee in a full on diamond watch and necklace paired with a baby blue Bottega tux. If there was a man on the red carpet without at least a lapel pin they may now be asking themselves: why?
