Smashbox and Shay Mitchell Just Dropped a YouTube Tutorial

This past Sunday, when you were still in tryptophan detox, we told you about the Smashbox and Shay Mitchell collaboration of seven limited-edition Cover Shot eye shadow palettes—and if your clicks were any indication, you were pretty psyched about that news. If you're lucky enough to get your hands (and lids) on a set—more on that process at the end of this post—Smashbox has released a handy video showing you everything you need to know to pull-off some seriously enviable looks.
From what we can tell, it looks like Smashbox is planning on releasing a how-to video for each of the seven palettes. The first up is Golden Hour, which features a range of twinkling bronze, pink, and violet shades—and the corresponding look that Mitchell showed off on her Instagram is a dynamic neutral eye with a halo of violet smoke around the outer rims. In the highly likely chance that you're wondering just how Mitchell built that glowing, intense look around her eyes, Lori Taylor, Smashbox’s global pro artist, just broke it down for you. All you’ll need is a reasonable internet connection, a Golden Hour palette, and two and a half minutes all to yourself.
As Taylor lays out in the video, each of the Cover Shot palettes comes with eight total shades. The two biggest rectangle pans are reserved for complementary base shades; the five others are hyper-pigmented, creamy shadows in a range of hues formulated to work together. (Other palettes boast shadows with different finishes, like foil, matte and shimmer.) Taylor tells us the formulas are designed to be "one-swipe," which, beyond the obvious, means you don't have to keep going back to the well (over and over and over again) to get any of the shades to even show up on your skin. Although the base shades can ground the entire look and help it come together, Taylor does use a Smashbox primer to help the pigments cling to the lids; another great bet is Too Faced Shadow Insurance Anti-Crease Eye Shadow Primer.
While Mitchell herself wasn’t able to sit for Taylor in the video, the star has done plenty of promotion on her own social media channels. She shared news of the exclusive release yesterday on Instagram, calling the new collaboration “the surprise party that was almost impossible to keep a secret!” In true Mitchell fashion, it wasn’t enough just to look like some kind of insanely glamorous goddess. The actress followed up the post with a goofy, behind-the-scenes look at what it took to shoot the campaign. Never have makeup wipes seemed quite so live-saving.
