Smashbox Announces Shade-Range Expansion of Its Beloved Studio Skin Foundation

You've gotta give it to Smashbox. There aren't too many foundations so well and widely loved that they stay on the market for years without being discontinued, but Studio Skin Hydrating Foundation has been one of the brand's best-selling products since its 2011 launch. That's surely due at least in part to the fact that it was proven to last an impressive 15 hours and had a respectable 22-shade range. But now, those two attributes are changing for the better.

On June 13, Smashbox will be launching an additional 18 shades of Studio Skin Hydrating Foundation to bring the shade total to 40 matte, medium- to full-coverage options ranging from very fair to very deep. Each shade indicates specific undertones to ensure the closest match possible and making its imperfection-blurring, tone-evening qualities even more effective.

For those who already loved the 15-hour formula, there's nothing to worry about — no changes had to be made in order for it to be considered a 24-hour formula. It simply hadn't been clinically proven that it does, in fact, last an entire day, until now. (Though fans of the foundation who are also fans of falling asleep in their makeup probably figured that out already.)

"Smashbox Studio Skin Foundation was rigorously tested," Jill Tomandl, Smashbox's VP of product development and innovation, tells Allure. "The formula has also been tested long days under the extreme conditions on the set of photo shoots under the hot lights, wardrobe changes, and wind machines."

This testing also played a big part in perfecting the expanded shade range. "Lighting is inherent to the Smashbox DNA, so we tested Studio Skin Foundation in our Flashbox Lighting lab using our lighting expertise," Tomandl explains. "This testing in Flashbox informed our shade development to address all skin tones and undertones."

The vegan formula is still hydrating yet oil-free, so it won't cause breakouts or make oily skintypes even more oily-looking. Smashbox also promises that it won't settle into lines or pores, transfer, oxidize, or melt with sweat or humidity.

The expanded shade range of Studio Skin Hydrating Foundation will be available at smashbox.com June 13 for $36, and it will be launching at Sephora, Nordstrom, select Macy's locations, and beauty.com on July 15.
