In 2012, Smash premiered on NBC. It was a TV show about the making of a fictional musical called "Bombshell" about Marilyn Monroe, starring Meghan Hilty and Katharine McPhee. It was a cult favorite, but lasted for just two seasons, and after it ended, fans have been clamoring for more.

"Ever since the show ended in 2012, not a week goes by that someone doesn’t ask us when will they see Smash as a musical," producer Neil Meron said in a statement. "We think we’ve come up with something the die-hard series fans will love but that will also be exciting for people who never saw an episode of the show. And above all else it will be a valentine to the Broadway musical and the exhilarating rollercoaster ride of bringing one to life."

Now, Smash will be a real musical—here's everything we know so far.

There's no word yet on the cast.

It's unclear at this point if any of the TV show's stars (Megan Hilty, Katharine McFee, Jeremy Jordan, Christian Borle, Debra Messing) will reprise their roles.

But the series' creative team will return.

Producers Steven Spielberg, Robert Greenblatt, and Neil Meron are back. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who wrote the bulk of the songs for the TV series will write the score. Bob Martin and Rick Elice will write the book. Choreographer Joshua Bergasse will also return.

"I am personally thrilled to be a part of this musical and its road to Broadway," Spielberg said in a statement. "Smash is near and dear to my heart, and it seems fitting that a new musical inspired by what we did on the show would eventually come to the stage."

"I’m beyond thrilled to be working with this incredible creative team and my producing partners, who began the Smash journey with me over ten years ago," he continued.

Smash will premiere during the 2024-2025 season on Broadway
