If you're a pet owner, there's a good chance that at some point you've experienced the panic that ensues when your dog or cat darts past your feet and out the door, or breaks out of the backyard. It's an awful feeling, especially if you don't realize right away that your furry friend has gotten out. A company called Pawscout makes it easier to keep track of your pet with a "smarter pet tag," which alerts pet owners via a mobile app if their dog or cat has gotten out.

The Smarter Pet tag uses Bluetooth technology to track your pet, utilizing the community as a resource, as well. As soon as your pet goes missing, you can mark them as "lost." Anyone with the Pawscout app on their phone who passes within 300 feet of a lost pet will get a notification with instructions on contacting the pet's owner. So basically, the more people who are using Pawscout, the better for you and your dog (read: you should buy one for each of your pet-owning neighbors).

The tag also allows you to create a detailed digital profile of your pet, including photos, vaccination records, and behavioral or medical issues. With the Outdoor Virtual Pet Leash feature, you can receive notifications to your phone if your pet goes outside of your yard or any other outdoor space that you've specified.

You can also use Pawscout's tag to find pet-friendly spots in their area, such as groomers, dog parks, and vets. The lightweight, waterproof tag is small enough that it fits cats and smaller dogs, too. Target sells the tag in black for less than $14-a very small price to pay for peace of mind when it comes to keeping track of your beloved pet!
