Sleep Researcher Lists 5 Things She Won’t Do Before Bed in Viral TikTok

If you're having trouble sleeping, you might want to take notes.

TikTok has emerged as a great place for advice on everyday issues–including sleep problems

In a new viral TikTok, a sleep researcher named Vanessa Hill decided to share the five things she would "never do as a sleep researcher."

Hill, a scientist, starts with a great one: "I would never let loud snoring go unchecked, in either myself or my partner."

She goes on to describe how some people come to her telling what they think are funny stories about having to sleep in another room because their partner snores, but Hill says intense snoring isn't something to ignore or laugh off.

While many people snore, it can be a sign of a serious health issue.

As Hill notes, "They could have sleep apnea, and untreated sleep apnea can have really bad health consequences, like diabetes, or stroke, or even heart failure."

For the second item on the list, Hill says that she wouldn't rely on just her general care doctor to solve a sleep problem.

Instead, she says to "push to be referred to a sleep psychologist or a sleep specialist."

She goes on to say that although it's not the general practitioner's fault, they don't receive a lot of training on treating sleep issues, so it's best to go to someone who specializes in it to receive the best care.

Next, Hill says, "I would never have caffeine in the evening. It's just not worth it when there's good caffeine-free options available."

For her fourth tip, she says not to keep "bright fluorescent lights on" until bedtime, as "it suppresses your natural production of melatonin. Dim that s—t."

Lastly, Hill advises people against forcing themselves to wake up at an early hour "for some ultra-productive, 'that girl' morning routine."

Hill explains, "Honestly, your sleep and your health is way more important than your productivity."

The sleep scientist also added some more information in the comments, letting people know that "a type of therapy called CBT-I is the gold-standard treatment against insomnia."

A lot of people shared personal anecdotes of their sleep experiences that either supported Hill's beliefs or went against them, with one person saying, "I wish I had seen this video 3 years ago! my partner has (now treated) severe sleep apnea and I didn't realize loud snoring could be serious."

Others commented more questions regarding sleep, like "what would you suggest for someone with constant nightmares?"

Hopefully, Hill will provide some more insight and tips in other TikToks in the future.
