Skirts, Classic Styling and Clean Washes Lead Resort 2024 Denim Collections

The clean, streamlined denim looks in Resort 2024 collections speak to the “recessioncore” and “stealth wealth” narratives filling up fashion editorial pages. Though targeting two different income brackets, both concepts call for pared-back designs with longevity on their side.

True indigo washes are at the heart of the timeless, normcore looks.

Victoria Beckham presented indigo relaxed fit jeans, sharper-looking straight-fit jeans and an oversized denim button-down shirt. The effortless aesthetic was replicated in Zero + Maria Cornejo’s collection in the form of denim culottes and short-sleeve jackets. Derek Lam 10 Crosby showed indigo denim as a chic three-piece suit.

Ferragamo opted for raw indigo denim for jeans and jackets, while Adeam made a case for rinse denim peplum tops and trousers.

Designers also leaned into classic fits and styling. Vests, white tank tops, collarless jackets and button-down shirts were frequently paired with denim. Kobi Halperin paired a jean jacket and slouchy jeans with blue Birkenstock sandals. A white tee and tweed jacket paired with Chloe’s straight blue jeans. Givenchy’s white jacket popped against slim blue jeans and denim handbag.

RTA, PH5, N°21 and Tanya Taylor were among the labels that showed denim maxi skirts. Each put their unique touch on the long-line silhouette, from RTA splicing the front and back to Victoria Beckham’s unraveled hems.

In general, skirts were prevalent in resort collections. Derek Lam 10 Crosby showed both maxi and knee-length jean skirts. A coated blue metallic mini skirt (and coordinating jacket) was part of Versace’s resort collaboration with Dua Lipa. Blumarine showed a micro mini adorned with a denim bow. In a nod to Y2K, Anna Sui styled a pleated denim skirt over pink tweed and denim trousers.

The brash washes of the ’80s and ’90s were present but in smaller quantities compared to prior seasons. PH5 showed washed black denim with dramatic highs and lows in a collection that spanned strapless tops and wide-leg jeans to a daring mini skirt. Off-White’s deconstructed indigo jeans faded to a bright white. A yellow tint injected a Western look into Balmain’s bootcut jeans styled with tweed and quilted jackets.

RTA played with oil-stained washes on cargo jeans and maxi skirts and applied black streaks to a long turquoise skirt. Slashes down the legs of the brand’s tan ombre jeans sharply contrasted against silk dresses and crochet tops. Merlette showed pink overdyed denim culottes with a cropped indigo jacket with puff sleeves.

There’s still room for novelty. In addition to piecing denim with tweed, Anna Sui decorated jeans with a variety of colorful floral print patchwork. Missoni recreated its signature zigzag motif with clear sequins on denim jackets and jeans. Balenciaga showed denim pieces with the tags still on the garment—perhaps a nod to the trend of keeping pocket flashes on the back of jeans.

Meanwhile, Stella McCartney laser printed images of bears, sheep and other members of the animal kingdom on a denim set. The brand also showed jeans with the cutouts at the hips and trimmed with rhinestones.
